Many people are not aware that SEMA started out as the Speed Equipment Manufacturers Association in the early to mid 60's. In 1970, they realized there was a conflict, since the government was cracking down on stuff like that. For what reason, who knows. They then changed the name to "Specialty" You can read about it here.
